HENRY RADCLIFFE SIMS PAPERS, 1917-1972 (Accession 9)
Henry Radcliffe Sims (1893-1966) was a lawyer, South Carolina state legislator, editor, and the fourth president of then Winthrop College, the South Carolina College for Women from 1944-1959. The collection consists of correspondence, biographical and family history data, newspaper clippings, and photographs concerning Sims’ World War I military career, his efforts to establish a radio station in Orangeburg, South Carolina, his association with the Sims’ Publishing Company, his relationship with family members, his association with various South Carolina legislators, and his candidacy for the presidency of Winthrop. There is also material relating to Sims’ nephew, Hugo Sims Jr., and the latter’s 1946 campaign for a seat in the South Carolina House of Representatives. Correspondents include Olin Johnston, Burnet Rhett Maybank, John T. Riley and Strom Thurmond.
