Fact or Fiction?

Fact or Fiction:

For about the price of an iPod today a Winthrop student could have paid for a year’s tuition, including Room and Board, laundry service, and textbooks 100 years ago for the 1912-1913 academic year.

Fact:

The expenses for a nine month term in 1912 cost $144.00, with tuition accounting for a mere $40.00 of that total (roughly the cost of filling a 12 gallon tank of gasoline in 2012)!

If you go back to Winthrop’s first academic year, 1886-1887, tuition was a scant $15 for three 12-week terms and free tuition was offered to those who could not afford it.

*note:  Room and board was not available during the 1886-1887 academic year.
