  1. When I was a Winthrop student, 1942-1946, the present Cherry Road location of the Archives at the corner of Cherry Rd & Charlotte Ave had no buildings at all but was an open field. I can
remember going there with a several friends and picking wild strawberries that grew there in abundance. We ate many but only had our handkerchiefs to put them in and strawberry stains don’t wash out very well. Across the road where the Winthrop Commons is now located was a pasture with a barbed wire fence. Cows grazing and at the lowest spot there appeared to be a spring. Anyway, cows were drinking in a spot that was too small to be called a pond.
