Librarian Spotlight

This month’s librarian spotlight is on Susan Silverman, Dacus Library’s Director of Library Assessment.

Thirty years ago Susan began her career at Winthrop as the Online Searching Coordinator. Since that time she has served as Head of Reference, Head of Public Services and now as the Director of Library Assessment. In her current position, Susan is responsible for developing, implementing, coordinating, interpreting, reporting, and promoting an assessment program for the library.

Susan received her undergraduate degree and a graduate degree in Education at the University of South Carolina. She then got her Master’s Degree in Library Science at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. She loved her time in D.C., where she had an internship at NIH and completed a practicum in the library at the Kennedy Center.  One of her favorite projects while working at the Kennedy Center was to organize their poster collection of all the center’s performances.

Outside of the work environment Susan is an avid reader and she loves to travel. She has either lived in or visited six of the seven continents, all except for Antarctica. Many of you may know Susan’s husband, Dr. Jason Silverman, Professor of History. They actually met here at Winthrop when Susan gave Jason his new faculty tour of the library. Many of you may also know Susan’s son, Alex, who graduated from Rock Hill High School in 2010 and Wofford College this past May. Alex will be heading to Japan on August 2 as a member of the JET Program.

As part of her library duties Susan has developed research guides for education resources and library assessment. Take a look at her Education Resources guide – it lists databases, reference books and websites that are trustworthy sources of information for any kind of education-specific research and/or projects. Already enrolled in or thinking about taking the MAED 548 course? If so, take advantage of this guide – there’s a tab devoted entirely to this course!  If you would like to meet with Susan for a research consultation, she is happy to set up an appointment. Dacus Library has many wonderful librarians on staff who all teach library instruction classes, work various hours on the reference desk, and do collection development work. Each librarian also has other specialized responsibilities within the library. To learn more, check back at the beginning of each month for a new librarian spotlight post.
