The week of September 24th is Banned Books Week, where we celebrate our right to read. This year there has been a 17% increase in reported complaints and challenges about books in libraries. These attempts at censorship occur mostly in school and public libraries. While only 10% of the titles reported are normally removed from the institutions receiving the challenges, half of the most frequently challenged books this year were actually banned. The Banned Books Week Coalition (BBWC) is responding with “Our Right To Read,” a celebration of the diverse range of ideas found in books, and our First Amendment right as citizens to make our own intellectual choices.
